OBJECTIVE: To assess the prognostic value of myocardial salvage index (MSI) by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data to identify primary studies reporting MSI in STEMI patients with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) comprised of death, myocardial reinfarction, and congestive heart failure. The MSI and MACE rates were pooled. The bias of risk was assessed using the Quality In Prognosis Studies tool. The evidence level was rated based on the meta-analysis of hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of MSI for predicting MACE. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were included covering twelve unique cohorts. Eleven cohorts measured MSI using T2-weighted imaging and T1-weighted late gadolinium enhancement, while one cohort applied T2-mapping and T1-mapping. The pooled MSI (95% CI) was 44% (39 to 49%; 11 studies, 2946 patients), and the pooled MACE rate (95% CI) was 10% (7 to 14%; 12 studies, 311/3011 events/patients). Seven prognostic studies overall showed low risk of bias. The HR (95% CI) per 1% increase of MSI for MACE was 0.95 (0.92 to 0.98; 5 studies, 150/885 events/patients), and HR (95% CI) of MSI < median versus MSI > median for MACE was 5.62 (3.74 to 8.43; 6 studies, 166/1570 events/patients), both rated as weak evidence. CONCLUSIONS: MSI presents potential in predicting MACE in STEMI patients. The prognostic value of MSI using advanced CMR techniques for adverse cardiovascular events needs further investigation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Seven studies supported the MSI to serve as a predictor for MACE in STEMI patients, indicating its potential as a risk stratification tool to help manage expectations for these patients in clinical practice. KEY POINTS: • The pooled infarct size (95% CI) and area at risk (95% CI) were 21% (18 to 23%; 11 studies, 2783 patients) and 38% (34 to 43%; 10 studies, 2022 patients), respectively. • The pooled rates (95% CI) of cardiac mortality, myocardial reinfarction, and congestive heart failure were 2% (1 to 3%; 11 studies, 86/2907 events/patients), 4% (3 to 6%; 12 studies, 127/3011 events/patients), and 3% (1 to 5%; 12 studies, 94/3011 events/patients), respectively. • The HRs (95% CI) per 1% increase of MSI for cardiac mortality and congestive heart failure were 0.93 (0.91 to 0.96; 1 study, 14/202 events/patients) and 0.96 (0.93 to 0.99; 1 study, 11/104 events/patients), respectively, but the prognostic value of MSI for myocardial re-infraction has not been measured.

BACKGROUND: The effect of anesthesia regimens on postoperative delirium after on-pump cardiac valve surgery is yet undetermined. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of volatile anesthesia compared with propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on the occurrence of delirium after on-pump cardiac valve surgery. METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was conducted at a university academic hospital in China, from February 2019 to January 2021. Patients scheduled for on-pump cardiac valve surgery or combined valve with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgeries were randomly assigned to receive anesthesia maintenance with either a volatile anesthetic (sevoflurane or desflurane) or propofol-based TIVA. The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium during the first 7 days after surgery, assessed using the confusion assessment method for the intensive care unit (ICU). The secondary outcomes included duration of delirium, subtypes of delirium, 30-day mortality, pain score, major morbidity (including cerebral infarction, respiratory failure, and pneumonia), duration of mechanical ventilation, and lengths of ICU and hospital stay. The statistical analysis of the primary outcome variable was by Pearson's χ 2 test. RESULTS: Among the 684 patients analyzed (mean age, 53.8 years; 381 [55.7%] women), 676 were assessed for the primary outcome. Postoperative delirium occurred in 63 of 337 (18.7%) patients receiving volatile anesthesia versus 76 of 339 (22.4%) patients receiving propofol-based TIVA (relative risk, 0.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55-1.16; P = .231). There were no significant differences between the groups in any of the secondary outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients undergoing on-pump cardiac valve surgery, anesthesia maintenance with a volatile agent did not result in significantly fewer occurrences of postoperative delirium than propofol-based TIVA.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with myocardial bridging (MB) frequently experience recurrent chest pain, even in those without coronary heart disease. This study aims to predict the risk of recurrent chest pain in patients with MB by using a novel predictive nomogram. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 250 patients with acute chest pain who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) between January and December 2018, including 111 patients with MB and 139 control patients. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariable Cox regression analyses were used to screen for significant parameters that were included to develop a novel predictive nomogram model. Receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analyses were used to evaluate the performance and clinical utility of the nomogram. RESULTS: A predictive nomogram was constructed in 111 patients with MB, 34 of whom (30.9%) had recurrent chest pain. The significant predictors screened out by the LASSO regression included age, sex, branch type MB, and systolic compression index. The area under the curves (AUCs) for recurrent chest pain at 12, 24, and 36 months were 0.688, 0.742, and 0.729, respectively, indicating remarkable accuracy of the nomogram. The calibration curve and decision curve analyses indicated a good agreement with the observations and utility of the nomogram. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a high-accuracy nomogram to predict recurrent chest pain in patients with MB. This model incorporates clinical risk factors and CT imaging features and can be conveniently used to facilitate the individualised prediction. KEY POINTS: • Symptomatic patients with myocardial bridging often present with recurrent chest pain. • The potential predictors of recurrent chest pain in patients with myocardial bridging were age, sex, branch type MB, and systolic compression index. • Nomogram based on clinical CT imaging features is valuable to predict recurrent chest pain in patients with myocardial bridging.

BACKGROUND: Polyarthritis is the most frequent clinical manifestation in antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) forms of idiopathic inflammatory myositis and may be misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly in patients with seronegative RA (SNRA). It is unclear whether there is an overlap between ASS and RA, or if ASS sometimes mimics RA. Pulmonary hypertension (PAH) is common in connective tissue diseases (CTDs). However, published reports on CTD-PAH do not include overlapping CTDs, and its incidence and impact on patient prognosis are unclear. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 63-year-old woman who presented with a 3-mo history of symptom aggravation of recurrent symmetrical joint swelling and pain that had persisted for over 10 years. The patient was diagnosed with RA and interstitial lung disease. The patient repeatedly presented to the hospital's respiratory and rheumatology departments with arthralgia, plus shortness of breath after activity. Relevant tests indicated that anti-CCP and RF remained negative, while anti-J0-1 and anti-Ro-52 were strongly positive. It was not until recently that we recognized that this could be an unusual case of SNRA with concurrent ASS. Joint pain was relieved after regular anti-rheumatic treatment. Chest computed tomography scans showed that pulmonary interstitial changes did not progress significantly over several years; however, they showed gradual widening of the pulmonary artery, and cardiac ultrasound indicated elevated pulmonary artery systolic pressure. The prescribed treatment of PAH was not effective in improving shortness of breath. CONCLUSION: Overlap of RA and ASS may be missed. Further research is necessary to facilitate early diagnosis, effective evaluation, and prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of volatile anesthesia and propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. DESIGN: Parallel-group, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Single-center tertiary care hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Five hundred twenty-four patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. INTERVENTIONS: The patients were assigned randomly (1:1) to receive anesthesia maintenance with a volatile anesthetic (sevoflurane or desflurane) or propofol-based TIVA. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcome was a composite of postoperative pulmonary complications within the first 7 postoperative days. The PPCs occurred in 118 of 262 patients (45.0%) in the volatile anesthesia group compared with 105 of 262 patients (40.1%) in the propofol-based intravenous anesthesia group (relative risk: 1.17 [95% CI 0.96-1.42], p = 0.123). There were no significant differences in the severity of PPCs within 7 days postoperatively, the occurrence and severity grade of PPCs within 30 days, the incidence of hypoxia, and 30-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, general anesthesia with a volatile anesthetic compared with propofol-based TIVA had not reduced pulmonary complications within the first 7 days after surgery.

Cadmium (Cd) from cigarette smoke and polluted air can lead to lung adenocarcinoma after long-term inhalation. However, most studies are based on short-term exposure to this toxic metal at high concentrations. Here, we investigate the effects of long-term exposure of A549 cells (lung adenocarcinoma) to cadmium at low concentrations using morphological and multiomics analyses. First, we treated A549 cells continuously with CdCl2 at 1µM for 8 months and found that CdCl2 promoted cellular migration and invasion. After that, we applied transmission electron and fluorescence microscopies and did not observe significant morphological changes in Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, or mitochondria on Cd treated cells; microfilaments, in contrast, accumulated in lamellipodium and adhesion plaques, which suggested that Cd enhanced cellular activity. Second, by using whole-exome sequencing (WES) we detected 4222 unique SNPs in Cd-treated cells, which included 382 unique non-synonymous mutation sites. The corresponding mutated genes, after GO and KEGG enrichments, were involved mainly in cell adhesion, movement, and metabolic pathways. Third, by RNA-seq analysis, we showed that 1250 genes (784 up and 466 down), 1623 mRNAs (1023 up and 591 down), and 679 lncRNAs (375 up and 304 down) were expressed differently. Furthermore, GO enrichment of these RNA-seq results suggested that most differentially expressed genes were related to cell adhesion and organization of the extracellular matrix in biological process terms; KEGG enrichment revealed that the differentially expressed genes took part in 26 pathways, among which the metabolic pathway was the most significant. These findings could be important for unveiling mechanisms of Cd-related cancers and for developing cancer therapies in the future.

BACKGROUND: Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCTs), synovial chondromatosis (SC), and synovial sarcoma (SS) exhibit similarities in clinical features and histochemical characteristics, and differential diagnosis remains challenging in clinical practice. METHODS: Data were collected from the pathology database of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital regarding patients who underwent surgery from 2010 to 2019 with histologically confirmed TGCTs, SC, and SS. Demographic and clinicopathological data of these patients were reviewed. Immunohistochemistry staining of 14 different markers was performed. Correlation analyses of the prognoses were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 26 patients with TGCTs (8 diffuse TGCTs and 18 localized TGCTs), 16 with SC, and 11 with SS were identified. Pain was the main symptom of patients with both TGCTs and SC, while a palpable mass was the most common symptom for patients with SS. In addition to clinical features, we identified vital risk factors for disease recurrence. The mean follow-up periods were 51, 39, and 14 months for TGCTs, SC, and SS, respectively. Younger patients with diffuse TGCTs or patients with a higher neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) displayed a significantly higher frequency of recurrence. We also plotted receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis for age and NLR. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated and demonstrated the ability to distinguish recurrent from nonrecurrent cases. In addition, higher CD163 expression was linked to recurrent diffuse TGCT cases. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicated possible characteristics of different aspects of TGCTs, SC, and SS. Further clarification and understanding of these factors will help with differential clinical diagnosis and recurrent risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: An anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left coronary artery sinus is usually characterized by an acute take-off angle. Most affected patients have no clinical symptoms; however, some patients have decreased blood flow into the right coronary artery during exercise, which can lead to symptoms such as myocardial ischemia. Most researchers who have studied an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left coronary artery sinus have done so through clinical cases. In this study, we used numerical simulation to evaluate the hemodynamics of this condition and the effect of an acute take-off angle on hemodynamic parameters. We expect that the results of this study will help in further understanding the clinical symptoms of this anomaly and the hemodynamic impact of an acute take-off angle. METHODS: Three-dimensional models were reconstructed based on the computed tomography images from 16 patients with a normal right coronary artery and 26 patients with an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left coronary artery sinus. A numerical simulation of a two-way fluid-structure interaction was executed with ANSYS Workbench software. The blood was assumed to be an incompressible Newtonian fluid, and the vessel was assumed to be an isotropic, linear elastic material. Hemodynamic parameters and the effect of an acute take-off angle were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: During the systolic period, the wall pressure in the right coronary artery was significantly reduced in patients with an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery (t =1.32 s, P=0.0001; t =1.34-1.46 s, P<0.0001). The wall shear stress in the abnormal group was higher at the beginning of the systolic period (t =1.24 s, P=0.0473; t =1.26 s, P=0.0193; t =1.28 s, P=0.0441). The acute take-off angle was smaller in patients with clinical symptoms (27.81°±4.406°) than in patients without clinical symptoms (31.86°±2.789°; P=0.017). In the symptomatic group, pressure was negatively correlated with the acute take-off angle (P=0.0185-0.0341, r=-0.459 to -0.4167). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left coronary artery sinus causes changes in hemodynamic parameters, and that an acute take-off angle in patients with this anomaly is associated with terminal ischemia of the right coronary artery.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has rapidly spread throughout the world. In this study, we aimed to identify the risk factors for severe COVID-19 to improve treatment guidelines. METHODS: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted on 313 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Patients were classified into two groups based on disease severity (nonsevere and severe) according to initial clinical presentation. Laboratory test results and epidemiological and clinical characteristics were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to detect potential risk factors associated with severe COVID-19. RESULTS: A total of 289 patients (197 nonsevere and 92 severe cases) with a median age of 45.0 (33.0, 61.0) years were included in this study, and 53.3% (154/289) were male. Fever (192/286, 67.1%) and cough (170/289, 58.8%) were commonly observed, followed by sore throat (49/289, 17.0%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that patients who were aged ≥ 65 years (OR: 2.725, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.317-5.636; P = 0.007), were male (OR: 1.878, 95% CI: 1.002-3.520, P = 0.049), had comorbid diabetes (OR: 3.314, 95% CI: 1.126-9.758, P = 0.030), cough (OR: 3.427, 95% CI: 1.752-6.706, P < 0.001), and/or diarrhea (OR: 2.629, 95% CI: 1.109-6.231, P = 0.028) on admission had a higher risk of severe disease. Moreover, stratification analysis indicated that male patients with diabetes were more likely to have severe COVID-19 (71.4% vs. 28.6%, χ2 = 8.183, P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical characteristics of those with severe and nonsevere COVID-19 were significantly different. The elderly, male patients with COVID-19, diabetes, and presenting with cough and/or diarrhea on admission may require close monitoring to prevent deterioration.

BACKGROUND: A disease caused by a novel coronavirus virus, named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and spread around the word. As of March 4, 2020, 93090 confirmed cases and 2984 deaths have been reported in more than 80 countries and territories. It has triggered global public health security. However, the features and prognosis of COVID-19 are incompletely understood. CASE SUMMARY: We here report that the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) increased in a confirmed COVID patient. The high level of ESR sustained for a long time even after the patient recovered from COVID-19, while all results related to tumor, tuberculosis, rheumatic diseases, anemia, etc. cannot explain the abnormal elevation of ESR presented in this case. CONCLUSION: Although the increased ESR cannot be explained by all existing evidence, it possibly links the abnormal pathologic change in some COVID-19 patients and negative prognosis, and provides the clue to dissect the mechanism of illness progressing in COVID-19 and its prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: Sternal incisions can generate persistent and intense post-sternotomy pain. Propofol has been shown to improve postoperative analgesia, but the preventive effect on persistent pain after cardiac surgery is unknown. The hypothesis of the present study was that intraoperative propofol-based anesthesia compared with volatile anesthesia could reduce the risk of chronic pain after cardiac surgery. DESIGN: A single-center, two-arm, patient-and-evaluator-blinded, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: A single major urban teaching and university hospital. PATIENTS: Five-hundred adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery via sternotomy randomly were assigned. With six withdrawals from the study and five from surgery, 244 in the total intravenous anesthesia group and 245 in the volatile group were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis. INTERVENTIONS: Patients randomly were assigned to receive either propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia or volatile anesthesia during surgery. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcomes were the incidence of pain at three, six, and 12 months after surgery defined as pain score >0 on the numeric rating scale. The secondary outcomes included acute pain, opioid use during the first 72 hours after surgery, and quality of life. The use of propofol did not significantly affect chronic pain at three months (55.4% v 52.9%, difference 2.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI] -6.6 to 11.6; p = 0.656), six months (35.5% v 37.5%, difference -2.0%, 95% CI -10.9 to 6.9; p = 0.657), or 12 months (18.2% v 20.7%, difference -2.5%, 95% CI -9.8 to 4.8; p = 0.495) compared with volatile anesthetics. Furthermore, there were no differences in acute pain score; morphine-equivalent consumption during the first 72 hours; and quality of life at three, six, and 12 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative administration of propofol did not reduce persistent pain after cardiac surgery compared with volatile anesthetics.

Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that patients who were aged ≥ 65 years (OR: 2.725, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.317-5.636; P = 0.007), were male (OR: 1.878, 95% CI: 1.002-3.520, P = 0.049), had comorbid diabetes (OR: 3.314, 95% CI: 1.126-9.758, P = 0.030), cough (OR: 3.427, 95% CI: 1.752-6.706, P < 0.001), and/or diarrhea (OR: 2.629, 95% CI: 1.109-6.231, P = 0.028) on admission had a higher risk of severe disease. Moreover, stratification analysis indicated that male patients with diabetes were more likely to have severe COVID-19 (71.4% vs. 28.6%, χ2 = 8.183, P = 0.004).@*CONCLUSIONS@#The clinical characteristics of those with severe and nonsevere COVID-19 were significantly different. The elderly, male patients with COVID-19, diabetes, and presenting with cough and/or diarrhea on admission may require close monitoring to prevent deterioration.

BACKGROUND: The anomalous origin of the right coronary artery (RCA) from the left coronary artery sinus (AORL) is one of the abnormal origins of the coronary arteries. Most of these issues rarely have any effects on human health, but some individuals may exhibit symptoms, such as myocardial ischemia or even sudden death. Recently, researchers have investigated the AORL through clinical cases, but studies based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have rarely been reported. In this study, the hemodynamic changes between the normal origin of the RCA and the AORL are compared based on numerical simulation results. METHODS: Realistic three-dimensional (3D) models of the 16 normal right coronary arteries and 26 abnormal origins of the RCAs were constructed, respectively. The blood flow was numerically simulated using the ANSYS software. This study used a one-way fluid-solid coupling finite element model, wherein the blood is assumed to be an incompressible Newtonian fluid, and the vessel is assumed to be made of an isotropic linear elastic material. RESULTS: The cross-sectional area differences between the inlet of the normal group and that of the abnormal group were significant (P < 0.0001). Moreover, there were significant differences in the volumetric flow (P = 0.0001) and pressure (P = 0.0002). Positive correlation exists for the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the RCA to the inlet area of the ascending aorta (AAO), and the ratio of the inlet volumetric flow of the RCA to the volumetric flow of the AAO, in the normal (P = 0.0001, r = 0.8178) and abnormal (P = 0.0033, r = 0.6107) groups. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the cross-sectional area of the AORL inlet may cause ischemia symptoms. The results obtained by this study may contribute to the further understanding of the clinical symptoms of the AORL based on the hemodynamics.

On 3 January 2019, China's Chang'E-4 (CE-4) successfully landed on the eastern floor of Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken Basin, becoming the first spacecraft in history to land on the Moon's farside. Here, we report the observations made by the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) onboard the Yutu-2 rover during the first two lunar days. We found a signal penetration at the CE-4 landing site that is much greater than that at the CE-3 site. The CE-4 LPR images provide clear information about the structure of the subsurface, which is primarily made of low-loss, highly porous, granular materials with embedded boulders of different sizes; the images also indicate that the top of the mare basal layer should be deeper than 40 m. These results represent the first high-resolution image of a lunar ejecta sequence ever produced and the first direct measurement of its thickness and internal architecture.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the influence of vessel length on transluminal attenuation gradient (TAG) and establish a new index, VLN-TAG (VLN-TAG (HU/100 mm2) = TAG (HU/10 mm)/vessel length (10 mm)), to estimate the diagnostic value using 320-slice computed tomography (CT). METHODS: A total of 150 coronary arteries from 52 patients who underwent single-beat scanning using 320-slice CT and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) within 2 weeks were retrospectively enrolled. TAG was obtained from the major three epicardial vessels, and its interrelation with the measured length of the vessels was evaluated by Pearson correlation and regression analyses. The changes in TAG and VLN-TAG were compared with the corresponding stenosis severities ascertained by ICA using repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: TAG had a significant interrelation with the measured length of the vessels (r = 0.644, p < 0.001). Neither TAG nor VLN-TAG with different stenosis degrees of < 50, 50-70, and 70-99% on ICA had significant difference among the three groups. Plaque composition had no influence on VLN-TAG in all groups. The combined TAG or VLN-TAG and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) assessment did not significantly change the area under the curve compared with using CCTA only. In the calcified vessels group, adding VLN-TAG to CCTA improved the specificity (92.86 vs 85.71%). CONCLUSIONS: Vessel length is an important factor impacting TAG. TAG does not offer an incremental diagnostic value compared with CCTA only for detecting coronary stenosis. KEY POINTS: • Transluminal attenuation gradient (TAG) does not improve the diagnostic value of CCTA. Vessel length impacts TAG, but VLN-TAG does not improve the diagnostic value of CCTA. • Plaque composition had no influence on VLN-TAG in all groups of stenosis degrees. There may be a minimal improvement in specificity when VLN-TAG is applied to the calcified vessels group.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of curcumin on TGF-ß2 regulated peroxisome proliferater activated receptor y (PPAR-γ)/platelet derived growth factor ß (PDGF-ß) signaling pathway in lung fibroblasts of mice. METHODS: C57BL/6 mouse lung fibroblasts were in vitro cultured with TGF-ß2, curcumin, or TGF-ß2 plus curcumin. The cell proliferation was detected by cell growth counting in the blank control group, low, middle, and high dose curcumin groups (5, 25, 50 µmol/L), the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) group, TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin (5, 25, 50 µmol/L) groups. mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ, platelet-derived growth factor receptor ß (PDGFR-ß), fibroblast growth factor R1 (FGFR1) were detected using reverse transcription PCR. Protein levels of PPAR-γ and collagen-1 were detected using Western blot and ELISA in the blank control group, the TGF-ß2 group, the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 µmol/L group. RESULTS: Compared with the blank control group, curcumin 50 µmol/L showed the most significant inhibition on cell proliferation at 48 h and 72 h. Compared with the TGF-ß2 group, TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 mol/L also showed the most significant inhibition on cell proliferation at 48 h and 72 h. Compared with the blank control group, mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ and PDGF-ß, as well as protein expression of PPAR-γ increased, the collagen-1 expression also increased in the TGF-ß2 group (P < 0.05). Compared with the TGF-ß2 group, mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ obviously increased in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 25 µmol/L group and the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 µmol/L group, higher than that in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 5 [µmol/L group (P < 0.05). mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ was higher in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 µmol/L group than in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 25 µmol/L group (P < 0.05). mRNA expressions of PDGF-ß was lower in TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin groups than in the TGF-ß2 group (P < 0.05). Besides, PDGF-ß mRNA expressions were lower in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 µmol/L group than in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 5 µmol/L group and the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 25 µmol/L group (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in FGFR1 mRNA expressions between the TGF-ß2 group and 3 TGF-ß2 plus curcumin groups (P > 0.05). Compared with the TGF-ß2 group, PPAR-γ protein expressions increased and collagen-1 protein expressions decreased in the TGF-ß2 (10 ng/mL) plus curcumin 50 µLmol/L group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Curcumin not only could inhibit TGF-ß2 induced proliferation of lung fibroblasts, but also could inhibit the synthesis of collagens. These might be associated with up-regulating PPAR-γ expressions and down-regulating PDGF-ß expressions. Therefore, curcumin might inhibit the occurrence and developing of lung fibrosis through blocking PPAR-γ/PDGF-ß signaling pathway.

Central neurocytoma/extraventricular neurocytoma is a central nervous system (CNS) tumor composed of uniform round cells with neuronal differentiation. The typical lesions of central neurocytoma/extraventricular neurocytoma are at the interventricular foramen of the lateral ventricles (central neurocytoma) or brain parenchyma (extraventricular neurocytoma). Mature teratoma is a benign germ cell tumor commonly found in young women. Herein, we report a 24-year-old female with neurocytoma in a mature teratoma of the right ovary. The histological examinations showed mature epidermis, skin appendages, adipose and bone tissues in the tumor; microscopic foci of immature cartilage tissues were also found in some parts. In addition, massive solid sheets and uniform round tumor cells were found in the neuroectodermal tissues, with the formation of neuropil-like islands. Immunohistochemical examinations showed that the tumor cells were synaptophysin- and NeuN-positive but GFAP-negative. Based on these findings, the woman was diagnosed with neurocytoma arising from mature ovary teratoma, with microscopic foci of immature cartilage tissues. This is the fourth case report of neurocytoma outside the CNS to date.
